New Trains in coming railway budget, State BJP

Ahead of Railway Budget, the State BJP has requested Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu to introduce two new trains for improved rail connectivity in Odisha.

Requesting for a new Bhubaneswar-Mumbai Duronto Express, president of the State unit of the party KV Singhdeo said Konark Express is unable to meet the increasing demand of passenger movement between the two cities. Currently, there is only one direct train from Bhubaneswar to Mumbai – the Konark Express – which takes more than 36 hours to reach the destination.

Since a large number of people from the State is working in various sectors in Mumbai, a non-stop Duronto Express will reduce travel time and make it convenient for them, he said.

Singhdeo urged the Union Railway Minister for a new Express train from Titlagarh to Allahabad. Purushottam Express, being the only train from Puri to Allahabad, completely bypasses Western Odisha, he added.

In a separate letter to the Union Railway Minister, former member of Parliament Bhabani Shankar Hota demanded introduction of a new train from Sambalpur to Allahabad.

“A new pair of Rajdhani Express may be introduced from Bhubaneswar to New Delhi on three days a week via Cuttack-Sambalpur-Jharsuguda-Bilaspur. Apart from benefiting passengers from Western Odisha and Chhattisgarh, it will shorten the travel distance to Delhi by 178 kms,” Hota said.

Hota urged Prabhu to consider Bargarh-Nuapada new line which will provide a third corridor to Raipur from Jharsuguda. The Visakhapatnam-Amritsar Express should be made daily with improved coaches, he said.

Asking for adequate budgetary support for early completion of Khurda Road-Balangir line, Hota demanded a driver training centre in Sambalpur Railway Division.

Cops Make a ‘U-turn’ in Sugrib Kidnap Case

Even as Bargarh police on Wednesday tried to take Sugrib Ranbeda, who was allegedly kidnapped by a minister, to Bhubaneswar to identify the place where he claimed he was confined, the cops had to drop the plan following orders from higher authorities.

Two weeks ago, Sugrib, a member of Rusuda Service Co-operative Society, had alleged that he was kidnapped and confined to the official residence of Handloom and Textile Minister Snehangini Chhuria in Bhubaneswar to prevent him from voting in cooperative election. Election to the cooperative society was held on January 25.

After Leader of the Opposition Narasingh Mishra raised the issue in the Assembly, police decided to take him to Bhubaneswar where he claimed he was confined to a room. While police were approaching Boudh, one of the officers received a call and was asked to take Sugrib back to his village at Rusuda.

In his complaint to the Bargarh SP on January 27, Sugrib had alleged that on January 18, supporters of Chhuria – Sadanand Khamari of Bagiapali, P Satyanarayan of Bheden and Dumatsen Rana of Dhatukpali – took him to the residence of the Minister in Bargarh. Later, he was taken to the Minister’s residence at Bhubaneswar.

When he requested the Minister to allow him to cast his vote, Chhuria allegedly locked him in her house and went to Kalahandi on a tour. Later, he was dropped in his village, a day after the election, on January 25. “Though my son Durga had reported the matter to the police the same day, no action has been taken so far,” Sugrib alleged.

Bargarh SP Umashankar Dash said efforts are on to nab the persons named in the complaint.

Chhuria, however, refuted the allegations. “The charges are false and politically motivated. I am in no way involved in the incident,” she said, adding that she is ready to face any inquiry.

Narasingh Accuses Minister of Role in Abduction Case

snehangini-chhuriaThe Opposition Congress on Monday brought abduction charges against Minister of State for Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Snehangini Chhuria in the Assembly.

Raising the issue through a special mention during zero hour, Leader of Opposition Narasingh Mishra alleged that Chhuria had abducted an elderly person of the rival political party from Hatgaon village under Bheden police station of Bargarh district before the election to Rusuda Credit Cooperative Society on 18th January.

Though the son of the abducted person filed an FIR on 25th January in Rusuda police outpost, the same was registered on 29th January. Despite the Minister’s name being mentioned in the FIR, the police dropped her name from the case under pressure from the ruling party, Mishra said.

But the minister denied the allegations, “saying they are baseless and politically motivated”. “I am ready for the inquiry, after all the truth will come out after the inquiry”.

In the police complaint, Durga Ranbida (son of Sugriba Ranbida) said his father was forcibly taken by three supporters of the Minister to prevent him from exercising his franchise in the election to Rusuda Cooperative Society.

Durga filed the complaint on 25th January as his father did not return home even after eight days.

In a separate complaint to the District Superintendent of Police, Bargarh, Sugriba said he was taken to the Bargarh residence of the Minister and later shifted to her official quarter in Bhubaneswar.

On the voting day, Sugriba requested the minister to let him go to cast his vote. Though the minister assured him that he will be taken with her, she went to Kalahandi after taking his sign on blank papers, the complaint stated. Sugriba was allowed to go to his village on 26th January after the voting was over.

Apprehending danger to his life, Sugriba requested the SP to give him protection, mishra said and demanded action against the police officers for the deliberate delay in registering the complaint and not taking action against the minister.

Mishra requested Speaker Niranjan Pujari to direct Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who is also in charge of the Home department, to give a reply to the House on the incident.
