Advocate among four highwaymen nabbed

Four inter-district highway robbers were arrested from the Boinda check gate by Angul Police on Thursday. Of the four, two had committed a highway robbery in the district by intercepting the vehicle of a doctor’s family, at gunpoint.

Sources said Ajay Kumar Maharana of Cuttack city and Akhaya Kumar Bindhani of Baranga had looted ` 2 lakh and gold ornaments from the family members of Dr Manas Behera near

Boinda.

Police said Ajay is an advocate by profession.

They had intercepted the four-wheeler in which Manas and his family members were travelling on NH-55 near Boinda and attacked them before escaping with the booty.

Even as police tried to chase them, the robbers escaped into the nearby forest. “We got to know that Ajay and Akhaya along with two of their accomplices were going in a car towards Cuttack from Rairakhol railway station,” said SP Satyabrat Bhoi.

Police intercepted their vehicle at Boinda check gate and nabbed all the four. The accomplices, identified as Basudeb Nayak of Paradip and Raju, have been remanded in Sambalpur police custody as they are wanted in various criminal cases there.

The other two involved in the Wednesday’s dacoity case are yet to be nabbed.
